Since the successful ascent of Kinpusan in July standing at 2598 meters, the group decided to up the challenge in October, 2001 and to take on Kaikomagatake which stands at a respectable 2967 meters. The hiking was not easy but the views were great. About half the hike was below the tree line. There was even frost on the ground at some parts of the hike. We reached the peak after 3 hours and 15 minutes of hiking. The view was amazing. It the far background Mt. Fuji can be seen above the clouds.

A view of the granite peaks of Mt. Kaikomagatake. This spot was 30 minutes from the trailhead. Ahead lies another 3 hours of hiking before reaching the peak. Hiking Kaikomagatake was one awesome view after another!

Taken from the peak of Mt. Kaikomagatake at 2967 meters, while a train of hikers head down towards the trailhead. The peak of Fuji-san can be seen in the far distance in the far upper left of the photo. The group earns another successful ascent. After the hike, the group kept with tradition by taking a soak at a local onsen followed by a victory feast complete with the always-delicious namadai (large draft beer).
